BARBER

Artist Profile.

The art of new media artist Katrina Barber illuminates, not only for the viewer, but in a most direct and intimate way the artist herself. Barber’s practice is directly informed by her experience as a Deaf artist, her artwork opening pathways for communication. Her paintings, watercolours and sculptures are self-reflective transient feelings as well as explorations and examinations of light that traverse the personal and innate to process driven theoretical creations.

Initially discovering her affinity for visual art 10 years ago through a local art group, Mixed Palette Inc., she was recognised for her artistic talent in the HERE&NOW13 project in conjunction with Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery, University of Western Australia. Barber has gone on to artist residencies, including  Perth Institute of Contemporary Art, and CASM Mandurah as well as exhibitions throughout West Australia and Melbourne.

Barber held her first solo exhibition, Glow, at free range Gallery, Perth in April 2015 and was artist in residence at Contemporary Art Spaces Mandurah (CASM) in 2015, followed by a solo exhibition at the gallery - Illumine II - in 2016. In 2014 Barber was included a prestigious exhibition at Alcaston Gallery  in Melbourne that ran in alignment with an International Outsider Art Conference- Contemporary Outsider Art: The Global Context held by the University of Melbourne, in conjunction with Arts Project Australia. Following on from this, Alcaston Gallery invited Katrina to have a solo exhibiton, Katrina Barber - Illumine, in 2016.

Katrina was selected to be a part of the HERE&NOW13 Project and exhibition produced by DADAA and the Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery. For the HERE&NOW13 exhibition at Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery (26 July – 28 September 2013) Katrina created ‘Light series’, a light installation along with panels of watercolour works reflecting her exploration of light as well as her inner emotions and feelings. The Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery purchased four of her watercolour works for their collection. Her work was selected to appear on the HERE&NOW13 exhibition publication’s cover as well as on the exhibition’s invitations
